“Please call me, I love you.” Samson reads out the message and fling the phone on the creamy laced sofa. “Nonsense” he sigh as he made his way into the bathroom. He had been expecting a bank alert notifying him of the money his friend Jero claimed to had transfered to his account via the internet two days ago, but instead had got an entirely different message. His composure throughout that day had been due to the much anticipated lucre he envisaged would change his pocket status. His neighbour, madam mercy, who noticed this had teased him that afternoon whispering into his left ear when no one was in sight to ask the cause of this his new found joy.

“Is my wife going to come?” she had asked him hoping to get no answer than a shy smile that usually plays around the corner of a one o’clock sun, and that was what she got from Samson plus mouthing of ‘na you sabi’ as a bonus.
As he drags his feet lazily into the bathroom, he could not but think of how penury will so drink a lady’s blood to the point that instead of putting a call across to one and wishing him happy new year, she instead is sending “please call me” and to even make matter worse, she added I love you. He laughed sarcastically at the mere thought of that word, love. Does that even exist in his own dictionary, it has died long time ago, and it will take only God to get it resurrected. What now overcharged his heart like air across the space is how he will get to meet Jero and tell him to his face that he could be nothing more than a liar, he is going to have to split open all the dirt he’s been bottling up for a long time, he thought to himself.
As the cab make it way towards Challenge finding its bearing from Ojoo, Samson soon find himself in the midst of bee-like noises of co passengers. And if not for courtesy he could’ve shouted one particular middle aged man down who insisted Badmus is not a good name, and anybody bearing such should just make a change of name to ‘Goodmus’, if he was in his right mood he could have open the gate of laughter, but such for now counts for nothing .
“Mr man, the name is not what matter but the achievement” stated a man whose big tummy is perfectly matched with a bald head. “Well, if you say so, but as for me I will never name my child Badmus, a combination of bad and musu.” The average aged man retorted.
As he alighted from the cab, his mind once again feeling the breeze of peace from the unnecessary arguments the cab avail him of the unsavoury chance of partaking in, he heads toward Jero’s lodge, his legs moving with the speed at which his mind pants to drop in Jero’s ear a piece of his mind before collecting what he brought from Abuja. He soon find himself standing in front of Jero’s quarter as before him stands a view of a crowd, moving close to where they stands, Samson could not believe the sight before him, at first, he wipe his face with his right hand to see whether his eyes was after all not deceiving him.
Jero lie down with face congealed, showing no sign of glee nor pain, foams covers his lips and some remnant drips down his neck.
‘Bros, please what is wrong with this guy’ he ask a young man who also stood amidst the crowd.
‘I were told by the mon over there that na magun he take’ answered the young man almost making Samson to laugh inspite of himself. ‘If you don believe, ask the mon’ he said Samson move closer to the elderly man standing near Jero’s body.
‘Sir, what happened to him?’ he asked as he jettisons the courtesy of having to greet first before speaking an elder, something typical of the south western Nigerian culture.
‘My son, he died of maagun’ the elderly man answered shaking his head like a leaf on top of a river. ‘sorry to ask sir, WH..A…T is the meaning of MAA…GUN’ he asked stammering.
The elderly man looked him over as if he is a strange being from mars. ‘You mean you don’t know the meaning,’ He said with mouth agape, well it is a charm that is attached to a married woman’s waist in which any person that have sex with her will die without remedy.’
Samson could not believe his ear, his intellect refute the possibility of such crap, if any of his friends had brought this up he could’ve asked for the test of verifiability of such posit, but now, for the sake of the situation at hand he will pretend as if it really is possible.
‘And this Jero lived for only one thing since I knew him’ said a ‘bedtacled’ man. ‘What is that’ the elderly man asked.
‘sex’
Samson looks at Jero and wonders at the ignorance of the men that sorrounds him as they runs their mouth on him like an heaven that is not exhausted of pouring floods, how could a handsome guy like this not live his life to the fullest, he thought before retracting his focus back to the issue on ground.
‘And who did he do it with’ he ask briskly.
‘That young lady over there’ said a broad chest man pointing in the direction opposite where Samson stand. ‘You mean this girl’ Samson look the girl obviously amazed at how Jero could so debase himself to the point of having an illicit affair with a girl he sized to be nothing less than 14 years, at that moment a part of him want to beat the hell out Jero’s corpse.
‘Who is her husband please’ he said, throwing the question to no one in particular. ‘The husband had taken to his heel having learnt about what happened’ someone answered from the crowd.
Samson thought he had learnt enough, his leg is soon found drifting away from where Jero lies. He couldn’t conceive of it that Jero could die this way, he died committing paedophilia and to even think he was maagun-ed rather than murdered is disheartening, he thought of reporting to the police but thought better of it, there and then, a thought occurs to him, he had before then thought of dropping his ambition of becoming a writer but here is a really interesting story, he is going to write a book on this and name it maagun; THE MURDERER WITHOUT A SWORD.

photographers
The concept of attractiveness is a fickle thing and is not easy to define. The most obvious aspect of attractiveness is, of course, physical appearance but it isn’t the only one nor is it even the most important one. I mean, take a look at Jack Nicholson. From the physical side of things, he looks nothing special. He isn’t handsome, athletic or anything physically special but he has got that certain something that makes him so successful with the ladies.  There are numerous factors that can make one person more attractive than the other. In some cases, people pull through on mere confidence, other times it is their actions that make them attractive, but what about vocation? Could this be one of the factors?
Well, according to a study done on the University of Pennsylvania’s students by professor Scott Barry Kaufman, there is a clear distinction between attractiveness based on which creative vocation a person has. While being a musician (in various forms) tops the list, if you are a professional photographer, you’ll be happy to know that you are standing in the solid 7th position.  Still, if we merged all the creative activities related to music into one universal position and removed sports which tops the charts (I mean come on, it’s not about creativity here, it’s about physical fitness), photographers would rank even higher. Buy why? What makes them so attractive? Well, there are more than a few things!
  1. They see the beauty in everything
Photographers are always looking for new inspiration, at least the good ones are. Their eyes are constantly searching for that angle, the composition or lighting that will help them snap their next masterpiece. This indubitably transfers into their everyday lives, so even when they do not have their photos in mind, they will be more than inclined to point out the beauty of a particular scene they come across and change their partner’s perspective on things. A lot of people assume that photographers are focused on physical beauty but the really good ones can actually find beauty in anything and everyone! They find beauty in the harshest places and make them look stunning! This is a tremendous talent to have – to change how a person looks at the world.
  1. They are creative people
Creativity radiates differently from one artist to another, as well as from one art form to another, but it always leaves a distinct mark on a personality the artist develops. There is simply a distinct approach to life that can attributed to creative souls universally and this is what sets them apart as unique. Photography is a good way to a distinct lifestyle, gives you a peculiar mind-set and to be honest, I don’t think that the lives of two photographers anywhere in the world are generally alike. With a few simple tips you can make your photos look great, but the originality and artistic values of the photos are goals that you really need to be a talented and dedicated professional to reach. It is just the general approach of documenting particular moments in time in an as beautiful way as possible, which gives them a unique vibe. Sure, we are all a bit into photography these days but not many are truly artists. The creativity trait often gives you advanced problem solving capabilities which are more than valuable in this art form and in life, in general.
  1. They are usually nomads
This is at least true for the time that they are younger and just starting out. As a photographer, you like diversity in your living environment as well as your business environment. There are really a few other vocations that would allow you to travel so much as this one. Whether you are a band photographer, sports photographer, fashion photographer, you need to travel. It is simply in your job description. All people who travel a lot and come in contact with different cultures give off that cosmopolitan look and their stories about different cultures are quite enticing. This travel charisma is a big factor in their attractive image. They are capable of packing in a moment’s notice, but they do this by knowing how to prepare in advance. Although their lifestyle may seem wild and fast, they are very organized people. After all, the equipment costs quite a lot, so you can’t be too careful when packing so you don’t forget something that is valuable as well as a necessity to your work.  Also, a lot of photographers speak more than one language and this is something that is universally attractive.
  1. They are independent and free
The majority of photographers are freelancers, who very much have control over what kind of work they do and who they collaborate with. This kind of freedom usually stems from a healthy dose of confidence and also gives people an environment to solidify their trust in themselves. When you are flying solo, you need to be able to manage all the work you do yourself and every mistake you make actually affects your own bottom line. This breeds capable and responsible people who are capable of holding their own in a relationship, which is a much desired trait in a partner. A lot of them possess a certain dose of streetwise which they picked up from their travels. After all, photographers are often targets of street attacks in any country in the world, due to the relative compactness of their equipment and its high value. This means that you need to be on your toes and be wary of dangerous situations. This kind of mindset gives photographers the ability to project a sense of security to other people. Being able to think on your feet is quite appealing to both men and women as a very attractive trait to, well, both men and women.
  1. They are always willing to meet new people
There have been more than a few meltdowns between partners caused by one sides disinterest in socialization and insistence on a more secluded lifestyle. This wouldn’t be the truth with people in this profession. Their line of work includes meeting and working with a lot of different people and they are very much adapted to diverse social environments and can always find a common topic for conversation with people of different backgrounds. Not everyone has the patience for meeting new people and not being able to adapt to somebodies circle of friends can sometimes be a deal breaker for some relationships. The fact that they fit in quite nicely and are generally liked by all gives them an edge. Moreover, these days, everyone wants to have good photos and people are generally a bit more pleasant towards those who can snap a great one on a whim. That was a joke – to some extent.
As you can see, there are tons of reasons why you might want to consider a professional career in photography. Still, a lot of people tend to get into it but underestimate the work and effort that you need to include in order really make it. It doesn’t just boil down to snapping a DSLR at things and people. There is a whole science and then there is the whole question of creativity and personal style. It takes years to practice and work to develop this craft to a professional level. The lifestyle is great but requires a lot of dedication and more than a few sacrifices.

Asun is a hugely popular dish. I mean what’s not to love about small, tender goat meat cubes, bathed in a fiery pepper sauce and sprinkled with sliced onions? It is a great little sharing dish and this is why so many bars and restaurants have it on their menus. My inspiration for these Mini Asun Tartlets was wanting to up the ante a little. How could we make it a)look better and b)feel more sophisticated?
mutton-pie-recipe
I have been obsessed with nibbles and finger foods for the last year and a bit. I love the conciseness of them, and the way in which they require you to be creative. They are a different discipline to larger dishes because you have less room to maneuver and so you you’ve just got to nail it. But they also have to be simple, otherwise they loose their charm.
I have made these several times and they are always a hit. They are so great for when you are hosting. Watch out though because they go so fast. If you are a Nigerian in diaspora and have trouble finding goat meat, try using mutton from your butcher instead.

Mini Asun Tartlets
This is a sophisticated spin on a classic Nigerian sharing dish called Asun. Asun is made by tossing stewed goat meat or mutton in a peppery sauce. In this version, I serve it in buttery puff pastry and garnish with fresh oregano.
Ingredients
1 batch Puff Pastry buy or make
1 kg goat meat seasoned, boiled soft and cubed
1 onion sliced
2 tatase or red bell peppers
1 tomato
3 hot scotch bonnet peppers
2 tbsp olive oil
salt to taste
stock cubes to taste
fresh oregano to garnish
Instructions
The goat meat takes a while to cook so get it out of the way. Wash, season and boil it in a pressure cooker for about 45 minutes, or until soft. Once the goat meat is cooked, drain of the stock and save it in a bowl. For this recipe, cut it into small cubes and shreds.
While the goat meat is cooking, make 1 batch of puff pastry. You can try this simple recipe from BBC Good Food http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2998685/puff-pastry
Roll the pastry out flat and use a glass or cookie cutter to cut out round shapes. Place these rounds carefully into each hole of yor mini cupcake tin, making sure not to tear the pastry. Then place the cut out rounds in the fridge while you get the rest of the filling ready.
Now, it is time to make the peppery sauce. To do this, place half the onion, the scotch bonnets, the tatase and tomato in a blender with a small splash of water and blitz until smooth. Then heat the oil in a frying pan, and pour in the blended ingredients.
When the water has evaporated and the sauce has thickened slightly, season it with salt or a stock cube. Cook for a little while longer, until the sauce is almost dry.
Now add the goat meat to the sauce and mix until all the pieces of meat are covered in sauce. You can add a splash of the goat stock for flavour but you don’t want a wet goat stew otherwise it will seep through the pasty in the next step. Cook for 2 more minutes to allow flavours to meld and then take off the heat to cool slightly.
When the goat and sauce combo is no longer piping hot, you can then spoon it into the pastry cases you made earlier.
Place the tray of filled tartlets into the oven and bake for about 15 minutes at 180*C or until the pastry is puffed up and golden.
Garnish with sliced onions and fresh oregano, and then serve.
