This is heartbreaking..A mother ran into her burning Philadelphia row house to rescue her toddler but died along with the child when smoke prevented their escape.
The fire broke out around 4 a.m. Friday in the city’s Fairhill neighborhood.

According to her Facebook page, the woman, named Elizabeth Perez was aged 29 and was expecting a baby girl in the next few weeks.

Just hours before her death, she posted a photo of her son, Nathaniel Richardson at the dinner table and wrote: ‘My baby boy was hungry and this is what he wanted pancakes.’

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says the woman initially escaped the blaze with other relatives but realized her toddler was missing.

He says she ran inside to save the child, but she was found holding the child near a second-floor bedroom doorway.

WAKING UP AT 3AM

What do you do when your eyes open at 3am for no apparent reason and you close them and try to go back to sleep, only to open them at 3.07am, unable to appeal to the sleep gods to bless you with some proper sleep?

Off the top of my head, there are several options.
– pray, in the casting and binding fashion, to expel the evil spirit that stopped by just to wake you up
– get out of bed and head to the refrigerator to snack on something unhealthy that will add to your love handles
– pick up your phone and scan through your notifications on instagram, twitter, facebook, bbm and watsapp…never minding the fact that you went to bed at midnight just after doing the exact same thing.

Thanks to Serena and this column, recently, when this happens to me, I wait a few minutes to see if the sleep gods bless me and then I go through my notifications then I pick up my laptop and type. I type whatever comes to mind…true stories and experiences, utter fiction and wishful thinking, to do lists and prayer requests….I just type.

This piece is one, borne out of one of such unplanned early mornings. As I typed away at random thoughts and things, I drifted into wondering why I didn’t just write things down in a note pad (I think I am a notepad addict…I have so many half used or untouched notepads and I would still happily buy or accecpt more as gifts). I figured I would try that morning and so I picked up a pad and a pen. I stared at that page for so long, fighting the urge to just pick up my phone again and go through notifications I had already seen. When it became obvious that my mind was not going to put any reasonable words together, I started to doodle. I drew the most ridiculous contraptions and the weirdness of the shapes made me question the state of my mind.

And then it hit me.

I belong to that league of humans who have evolved passed the phase of writing by hand. We have discovered that it is possible to function with our laptops as an extension of our arms and brains and we truly are unable to function without a keyboard and display screen.

I shook my head at myself.

When the day is bright, I just might take a trip to a store and buy myself a handwriting learning book….the kind that has the letters that you trace over and over till you can write it yourself. Or I might just accept my evolution and make the most of it.

What I will certainly do though, is go to my kitchen and try out the new herbal tea I bought…the sales girl said it enhances brain function.

My definition of fake beauty pageants are those ones that have been arranged. Some group of people come together and decided that they are going to organize a beauty pageant for the sake of pimping girls or some other reason, they pick the winner of the pageant and everything is just for show. In such pageants, a winner has already been selected because they are sure she will comply with their request of prostituting. They can’t possibly crown a girl they don’t know she might end up exposing them or not complying to the agreements they’ve had with their so called “sponsors”. Contesting in such pageants with clear motives will be a waste of time. Maybe these pointers will help you spot them out. I don’t know the heart of man to tell which is fake and genuine but I can try.

They are not on the Internet
In this 21st century, any pageant that is not online is a suspect. Some because the state or region needs it e.g. Miss FTC but when some people come up and call one name with no base for organizing a pageant, it could mean they want to pimp girls. I may be wrong

There is too much payment involved
A beauty pageant that is asking too much from you, pay for hair, makeup, choreography uniform, t shirt, accommodation is a scam. No too ways about it.

You cannot find any off their past winners with the grand prize
They claim to give out cars and when you surf through their website or past winners’ facebook, instagram and twitter photos (you should do this) you cannot find any of them with cars. There is no young girl that will win a car and wouldn’t want to flaunt it.

The organizers are men
This does not apply to all cases as women can also be pimps but many a times it is women who understand and enjoy the art of pageantry. The men just want to use it as a business avenue or pimping agency. So the winner is chosen according to who paid highest for the crown (yes incase you don’t know, crowns are bought) or whose father is a senator that will donate to their organization or who is willing to sell her vagina.

The organizers look like pimps
You can just tell when you see the organizers of the pageant that these dudes are pimps. Don’t silence that voice of judgment inside you. Its an instinct to turn away. You go to pick up the form and their eyes are all over you my dear take a U turn.

The past winners look like Sex Objects
Whenever you see their past winners or present queen, their look is not responsible. I know a big pageant in Nigeria which works with a particular past winner regularly and whenever you see her; you can almost see her panties cause of the length of gown she puts on. You don’t need a prophet to tell you that is not a genuine pageant.

The past Queens are not intelligent
When you cannot quiet wrap your head around why the winner is a queen then the pageant is a fraud. I have met beauty queens that cannot speak fluent English it make you wonder how they answered their interview question and how they represent their organization. Maybe the kind of representing they do does not require talking too much.

Naija Single Girl: Leave Our ‘Thing’ Alone!

Vagina is a sacred word at the best of times; having it shouted by a six-year-old can only add to its unutterable weirdness. So, what did my mum call that region? Bumbum.

I was contented with the name. I mean, it was pretty easy to call it that, whenever I was in the midst of my age mates and adults.
At that age, I was completely oblivious there were over 5000 names for the vagina, and I’m sure they were all given to us by men!

I grew up and made best friends with one girl in my church. Her name is Omotola. Being a lazy person, Omotola is a four syllable word and it did strain my vocal cords. I needed something easy so I shortened her name to Tola.
The name ‘Tola’ got too common. I thought of adding a more personal touch to her name so I settled to called her ‘To’.

I was outside my church premises one Sunday when our Sunday school teacher told me to call Omotola.

”To…To” I screamed at the top of my voice. One stern looking woman pulled my arms roughly. “Don’t ever say that word in public! Ever!”

I got to know her reasons for that years later.

My room mate walked in from the bathroom scratching her ‘thing’ while I gave her a queer look.

Pussy

I’ve never been a fan of cats. The image that comes to my mind when the word cat is mentioned is a scary witch that walks on all four at night.
Oh, Nollywood taught me that.
In Hollywood, felines are sweethearts. It’s common to see over pampered kids running around the house, asking their mum, “Where is my pussy?”

You can imagine my shock when I was told what is between my legs is nothing but a synonym for ‘witch’.

Social media came and worsened matters.
If you log in there and call yours a Vagina, those people might treat you like your  picture is beside the word ‘arcade’ in a dictionary.

I don’t know about you, but it’s totally unacceptable for someone to refer to my thing as ‘The Pussy’. If we had to pick names with references to animals, whatever happened to beautiful names like ‘The Peacock’?

Cunt

There are other popular disgusting and some downright hilarious names for Vagina.
The most annoying of them is The Cunt. The image that comes to my mind when the word cunt is mentioned is Mr Bean face.
Funny enough, this word is used in dirty erotic magazines so I’m just going to pretend its foreign to Nigerians. 😐

Honeypot

The origin of this name will forever intrigued me. The first time I heard it, I had to taste my urine.
All I tasted was Salt. Why don’t they call it saltypot? Please, let’s not get the bees angry.

The Box

The first day I heard of this name, I spent all week looking for the similarities between the box I have and the box I kept my clothes. Whoever came up with this name owes me an explanation.

That being said, I spoke to a few friends concerning this topic and I came up with these myths:

• For toddlers, its known as weewee
• For kids below 9, its known as bumbum
• For teens in secondary school, its best to call it vagina
• If no man has seen it, call it the flower
• When you are about to loose your virginity, it should be called honeypot
• After you’ve lost your virginity, it should be called Pussy
• If you’ve slept with more than 3 guys, it should be called puna
• If you are a prostitute, it should be called cunt
• Once it expands like a well, call it the box
• Once it starts slacking (GOD FORBID mine), it should be called toto
• If you’ve sworn never to shave there, maybe because you want to plant yams there in the bush or God knows why, call it the cave
• Once you get married, call it private part
• If you are very generous with it, call it public…part
• Once menopause hits, call it downstairs

For the rest of us that don’t fall under any of the above category, leave our ‘thing’ alone.
