a daily task and stumbled upon this news item
about Canada legalising the use of the RU-486
Abortion Pill. Took me a minute to scan the
article and moved on. On a second thought, I
just decided to share the article with fellow
Hub201ans.
Regulatory agency, Health Canada has approved
the use of RU-486 Abortion Pill in the country;
this pill would be used on pregnancies with a
gestation period of 49 days and a doctor’s
prescription must be obtained before the drug is
sold.
It will be sold under the name Mifegymiso and is
manufactured by British based Linepharma
International Limited. Mifegymiso is said to be a
mixture of misoprostol and mifepristone; these
two chemicals combine to kill the unborn child.
The former suppresses the production of the
progesterone hormone which is very essential in
pregnancy while the latter in charge of evacuating
the placenta and the growing foetus from the
uterus.
Canada joins the likes of France (1988), the USA
(2000) and about 55 more countries more where
the drug is legalised for use. Mifegymiso will
arrive on shelves in Canada by Winter 2016 and
would be distributed by CeloPharma Inc.
On a lighter note, Canada could now be a major
hub for people seeking medical attention (and
abortion pills of course). Mistakenly if you had
to come when you were not expected to come,
guess you just have to fly her to Canada to get
the thing done.
Am throwing out this question to the wind –
Should Nigeria consider legalising this drug for
use?
